Woburn Abbey Study Day: The Art of the Zen Garden

A study day with a unique opportunity to explore the world of Japan's Zen Gardens.

Woburn Abbey Gardens

The Zen gardens of Japan are places in which to meditate. They can be anything from a landscaped garden, complete with waterfalls, to a bed of raked pebbles. This ancient way of gardening goes back to the Zen Buddhist priest-gardeners of the thirteenth century. Based on abstract compositions, relying on simplicity and suggestion, their gardens were designed to liberate the imagination, and provide a starting point in the appreciation of everyday things.

This study day is a unique opportunity to explore the world of Japan’s Zen Gardens including the methods of applying Zen gardening to your own outdoor spaces. Take an in-depth look at both the history of these gardens and the principles behind their design and construction. With demonstrations in the art of Japanese rockwork and a particular focus on the practical aspects of these principles. This study day provides a hands-on guide to the composition of these gardens and their components.

This study day is presented by writer and landscape designer Keir Davidson, author of Zen Gardening.

Woburn Abbey Study Day: Humphry Repton at Woburn Abbey

Take an indepth look at the career of Humphry Repton.

WA Repton Study Day

When the 6th Duke of Bedford inherited Woburn in 1802 he commissioned the famous landscape gardener Humphry Repton (1752-1818) to create designs for enhancing the gardens and park land. His ideas were written and illustrated in his ‘Red Book’ of 1805. With the Duke being Repton’s most important client, at a time of declining commissions, the Woburn Red Book is one of his largest works. It also contains Repton’s most ambitious and detailed designs covering the approaches to the Abbey, the lakes and plantings in the surrounding parkland and the formal Pleasure Grounds. Repton himself wrote that his designs “have nowhere been so fully realised” as they have been at Woburn.

On this study day, take an in-depth look at Humphry Repton’s career, what made him such a remarkable and visionary landscape gardener, his techniques and processes and the creations he conceived. Referencing Woburn’s Red Book and Woburn Abbey’s archived journals and account books from 1805 to1810 will give firsthand accounts of Repton’s methods and ingenuity. An exploratory guided walk through the gardens and deer park will reveal how Repton’s designs were implemented, how they have fared throughout the centuries and the restoration and recreation projects happening today.

This study day is presented by writer and landscape designer Keir Davidson.

Ian Pickford presents ‘Silver and the Social Custom’

We’re delighted to welcome Ian Pickford to Woburn Abbey Antiques Centre to present 'Silver and the Social Custom'.

AC Ian Pickford (Antiques Roadshow)

Ian will be drawing on his own expertise and extensive experiences of many years in the antique business. For those of you who are interested in antiques then this talk will be a fascinating insight and a great opportunity to take advantage of Ian’s knowledge to add to your own interest and know-how of antiques.

Ian Pickford is the popular silver expert on the BBC’S Antiques Road Show and is also known as the author for the now standard reference book, “Silver Flatware English Irish and Scottish 1660-1980”. He is also the editor of Jackson’s Silver and Gold Marks and is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and Freeman of the City of London. Ian entered the silver trade straight from Westminster City School and later became a lecturer for the University of London, the University of Surry, Great Britain’s National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies and also for the National Trust.

‘Silver and the Social Custom’
Ian presents a fascinating insight into how silver objects whether practical or purely decorative developed and became part of the social custom within society. Whether driven by fashion or practicality, silver became widely used for all manner of purposes. In order to appreciate and understand any piece, it is essential to look at it in the context of the social customs and ways of life of the period in which it was made. Only then can the reasons for such things as silver chamber pots, elaborate dressing-table sets and lids on cups be properly understood. Ian’s relaxed and tremendous enthusiasm of the subject is infectious and you are sure to have an interesting and enjoyable time.

A morning event, these are informative presentations for a limited number of 40 people for approximately 3 hours (including 30 minute interval) and includes a Q&A session.
