EAZA Carnivore Campaign
In Europe, carnivores are confronted by two contrasting groups of problems; one devolving from an increase in carnivore numbers and the other from a decline in their habitat.
Woburn's aim for this campaign is to raise funds to support the preservation of these endangered species, to educate people and raise awareness which will in turn encourage people to recognise the positive benefits that carnivores have on our environment as well as the special role they have had in shaping our folklore and culture.
The theme of this year's campaign from EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) Living together
encompasses both of these. On the one hand it means acting to facilitate the survival of threatened and endangered carnivores and, on the other, learning to live with those which are increasing in numbers, encroaching our territory and generating conflicts.
Europe is home to a number of carnivore species both large and small, EAZA has selected twelve of the most threatened species as our focus as follows:
- Artic Fox (Alopes lagopus)
- Brown Bear (Ursus arctos)
- Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra)
- Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx)
- Eurasian Wildcat (Felis silvestris)
- European Mink (Mustela lutreola)
- Grey Wolf (Canis Lupus)
- Iberain Lynx (Lynx pardinus)
- Marbled Polecat (Vormela peregusna)
- Polar Bear (Ursus martitmus)
- Wolverine (Gulo gulo)
