Deer Tours - Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th October 2021

Join the Deer Keepers for an hour and a half tour of the Woburn Abbey Deer Reserve where you will able to get up close to the beautiful deer.

In groups of up to 12 people, you will be guided by two of our experienced and knowledgeable deer keepers, who will tell you more about these deer, their habitat and behaviours whilst taking you off-road across the Deer Reserve.

October is also the breeding season (the rut) for many species, with dramatic clashes between stags to win dominant control of their herds. For you to encounter these magnificent animals as close up as possible, the deer keepers will take you into areas of the Deer Reserve closed to the public.

This is the perfect opportunity for keen photographers to take the ultimate picture.

This fairly unassuming object was found in a blocked-up cupboard in the Book Room during preparation for redecoration. It is a Craftsman’s Cap, which was historically worn by painters and other trades to protect their hair during work, when washing frequently was not possible.
Made of paper, the hat would have been an ephemeral object, discarded after a few wears. Curiously, the inside of the hat bears a pencil inscription which appears to be initials and a date - 1698. If the date can be deemed accurate, then it would be an extremely early example of this hearwear. #discovery #renovation #craftsmanship
Three landscapes by Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) from the Woburn Abbey Collection that have never before been on display in the Netherlands will be returning to the city where they were made.

From 3 October, the long-awaited exhibition about Dordrecht’s most famous painter Aelbert Cuyp will be on view at the Dordrechts Museum. In the Light of Cuyp: Aelbert Cuyp & Gainsborough – Constable – Turner will examine the impact of the Dutch master on British landscape painting.

In addition to almost thirty of Cuyp’s most important paintings, the exhibition will also provide a broad overview of works by British painters inspired by the Dutch artist.

The story of Dordrecht’s greatest painter is unique. Cuyp was very much a local artist in his day, virtually unknown beyond his hometown.

He lived and worked his entire life in Dordrecht and the buyers of his landscapes came almost exclusively from his birthplace. It was only after his death that he was discovered by English collectors and artists.
Field of Cloth of Gold Exhibition ends this week at Hampton Court.
The artwork depicting Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon is currently on loan for this exhibition from The Woburn Abbey Collection.
